10 Foods You Shouldn’t Keep in the Fridge!

Is your fridge full? So jam packed you can’t possibly squeeze another ½ pint of milk in?

Or even a solitary egg?

I can help. Here’s a list of 10 items that you may have stored in your fridge but that really don’t need to be there:

1. Bread – bread dries out and actually goes stale quicker when stored in the fridge. Keep it in a cool, dry place.
2. Onions – they don’t belong in the salad drawer. Instead they should be in a dry, ventilated area, preferably somewhere dark to prevent them sprouting.
3. Garlic – as with onions, store in a dry, ventilated place.
4. Avocado – if you keep them in the fridge they will go from rock hard to mush without ripening. They are best left in an open brown bag. Once cut, however, they should be stored in the fridge.
5. Tomatoes – when cold they are pretty tasteless so keep them at room temperature to get the best flavour.
6. Honey – honey is a natural preservative so should be in the cupboard, not the fridge.
7. Cake – unless it has real cream, cream cheese filling or icing then cake can be stored in an airtight container.
8. Melons – keep out of the fridge while whole. Once cut, cover in cling film and pop in the fridge.
9. Coffee – coffee should never be kept in the fridge, be it beans or ground. Keep in an airtight container.
10. Eggs – I mentioned eggs at the start of this blog but they really don’t need to be in your fridge. You don’t find them in the chiller cabinet in the supermarket do you? Providing your kitchen is relatively cool they are quite safe to store at room temperature.
