Keeping your appliances running smoothly and at their best can seem like a daunting task however, this isn’t always the case. Preventative maintenance is crucial for getting the most out of your appliance, especially when it comes to your freezer.
There are many simple steps you can take to keep your freezer working brilliantly. Follow our simple guide below.
1. Set the appropriate temperature in your freezer.
If you have had your freezer for a while, or you have just bought a new one – you may still wonder how you can set the temperature correctly. Find the dial or use the digital screen if you have one and choose from the following temperatures:
- 0 – Used for cooling the system off.
- 1 – Warmest setting.
- 2-3 – This is the recommended temperature for most freezers.
- 4+ – The cooler settings.
It is always worth double-checking the recommended settings for your specific freezer to ensure you have the right temperature. You can usually find this information in the manual or through the brand’s website.
Keeping your freezer at the right temperature will also help to ensure your food is kept frozen, discouraging the growth of bacteria.
2. Clean the inside of your freezer regularly.
Cleaning the interior of your freezer will help remove any build-up of food, ice and bacteria. It does sometimes take a good few hours but, it will help keep your freezer working at its best.
It is important to defrost your freezer if there is a build-up of more than one centimetre of frost on the interior walls. Use the appropriate cleaning products.
3. Position your freezer away from heat sources.
To get the best results from your freezer, you must keep it away from direct sunlight and any other heat sources such as an oven. Make sure that the freezer has plenty of space around it, this will allow good airflow to help it keep cool.
The manual or brand’s website may give you further guidance as to the best way to install and position the freezer in your home.
4. Clean the freezer seal.
The door seal is often forgotten about when it comes to the upkeep of your freezer. The seal however, plays a crucial part in your freezer’s functionality.
A clogged, cracked or missing seal can prevent your freezer from staying tightly closed. This will cause it to use more energy to try to keep cool. Give it a clean and replace it when it shows signs of wear.
5. Don’t overfill your freezer.
Of course, your freezer can be filled up appropriately. Overfilling your freezer however, will cause issues. An overfilled fridge will cause the condenser to work much harder as there are more products to keep cool. There will also be a lack of appropriate airflow, which again will cause the condenser to work much harder.
